The columns at the Temple of Fame look like solid stone. However, at closer inspection, they are in fact just painted wood. The Temple of Fame is a Georgian folly created as a place to entertain and picnic for Georgian visitors to the Gardens. The Temple looks down on the gardens and Abbey itself and is another replica of a European folly, probably first seen in the magazines of the day. The Temple of Fame is another of the attractions on the High Ride on the Fountains Abbey estate, originally accessible by horse and cart.
