The Priory Gatehouse, a scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade 2 Listed Building, was the entrance to Great Malvern Priory, founded in 1085. It was a Benedictine monastery and this, and the Priory itself, are the only remaining monastic buildings in Malvern.
At this gatehouse, dating from about 1480, visitors declared their business to a porter who kept watch through the small "squint", now glazed, in the passageway wall. The porter would open the large oak doors which hung from the solid wooden gateposts that still survive.
