In ancient times the Arabs navigated the world using astrolabes like this -in fact, there's an original version of this in the British Museum. The user would change the plates on the astrolabe depending on where they were in the world and what time of day it was. I bought it in Tehran when I was living there. It was before the revolution and it was an amazing place to live.
