The Canal Bridge, Sydney Gardens, Bath' is by John Nash who visited Bath in 1925 and was immensely struck by these commercial pleasure gardens created in the 1790s. By 1810 this romantic landscape was altered forever when the Kennet and Avon Canal was built. Later, a cutting was made for Brunel's Great Western Railway line which opened in 1840. Although these signs of progress changed the character of the gardens, Nash showed how the canal added to their picturesque beauty.
