This scoop shaped wicker basket is known as a 'scull' or 'scoo' and was normally used for holding baited fishing lines. It was made in Embo, near Dornoch in the late 19th or early 20th century by John (Bonar) Mackay whose boat was called the 'Maggie' after his mother Maggie Ann. Sadly fishing in Embo stopped in the 1920's but happily the basket survived.
From 1938 to 2008 it was in London and used to store logs. The basket took the long journey from Embo to London with John Mackay's daughter. It was taken by wheelbarrow from Embo to the railway station at the Mound and then by train down to London remaining there until returning to its place of origin in 2008.
