The oldest of these early wall boxes, dated 1857, is painted green and was soon replaced because it lacked a protective porch over the flap, and rain soaked the contents. All boxes were painted red during the 1870s. The metal plates on all British post boxes were designed by J. Rich when Postmaster of Manchester. As Bath's Chief Clark he had married the Postmaster's daughter. A King Edward Vll box is the last displayed.
