Hundreds of these hankerchiefs were produced after the event and would have been carried by radical supporters.A meeting of reformers demanding the right to vote was dispersed in Manchester in 1819, with 18 dead and over 400 injured. Public opinion was outraged by what became known as the 'Peterloo Massacre' and led to the first reform of Parliament in 1832. The handkerchief shows the attack by the military and is typical of items produced to commemorate the event and spread the reform message.
