A Japanese flag from Burma in WW2

One wet Saturday afternoon, when I was in my early teens, I decided to take all the records out of the record cabinet - 78s in brown paper covers. I can still smell their very particular smell. Right at the back I found this flag - blood stained an covered in Japanese characters. I ran to show it to my father who had been in Burma during the war. He snatched it from me and I never saw it again until I had to sort out his house after his death. I know little about it - and would like to know more - if anyone can tell me about the circumstances in which my father acquired it.
